tomblandford > Sea Otter, Homer, Alaska We found this friendly sea otter in the Homer Spit Marina. It was napping for quite a while...we even heard it snoring. Occasionally, it would open its eyes to check us out, but then go right back to sleep. When it finally woke up, it immediately started eating, first some clams and then a crab. It used the classic otter technique of placing a rock on its chest and banging the shells against it to break them open...a very cool thing to watch.

tomblandford > Western Diamondback Rattlesnake View in XL or larger. While birding in Deadhorse Ranch State Park, AZ, we looked down and saw this Western Diamodback about 4 or 5 feet from where we were standing. It was coiled and never rattled. After our heartbeats returned to something near normal, I snapped a few shots before leaving the snake for "safer" birding. We were glad we saw the snake, because birding that day was very uneventful.
